Here at Eustace Consulting, we have developed our own framework for deploying salesforce public knowledge solutions.
Our framework uses standard salesforce functionality, including a custom site template from the provided CSS and HTML, Apex Classes, implementing global search, Visualforce Pages for each article type in the Knowledgebase, and custom controllers and extensions for each of the pages, to allow each page to function as desired.
